Requirements for both hardware and software design

We tested the G713QC model, which is a powerful gaming laptop with a distinctive design. You can tell this is a high-end tablet because of its matte gray chassis, which features sleek lines and Republic of Gamers patterns and insignia.

On the laptop’s screen lid, there is a white ROG logo that cannot be turned off, even if you wish it to be.

There are a lot of large hinges holding the laptop’s screen to the laptop’s body, and they look very solid. On the bottom of the laptop, there is a network of tiny holes for the processor, graphics, and RAM, as well as a large number of air vents on the back and sides. The laptop should be kept cool at all times by a combination of everything working together.

When it comes to dimensions (width, depth, and height), the 17-inch ASUS ROG Strix G17 and G713 series laptops aren’t as massive as you might expect (measurements are in inches, not centimeters). The weight is 5.29 pounds, or 2.40 kilograms.

When it was introduced in the spring of 2021, the laptop used an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor. Powered by a 7-nanometer manufacturing process, it features eight cores and sixteen threads running at a maximum frequency of 4.4 GHz. Level 3 cache memory and a TDP of 45 watts are standard on this CPU.

It had 16GB of DDR4 RAM running at a speed of 3200 MHz in the laptop we used for testing. There are two SO-DIMM slots on the laptop, and you may upgrade the RAM up to 32GB if necessary.

An integrated GPU and a separate Nvidia graphics card are both included in the ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713QC laptop. Eight cores and a clock speed of 2000 MHz make up the AMD Radeon Graphics in the processor.

In terms of discrete graphics cards, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 with 4GB of GDDR6 and a 128-bit bus width is the better option. Nvidia’s Ray Tracing and DLSS technologies are supported by this graphics card, despite the device’s lesser RAM capacity than you may expect.

17.3″ FHD (1920×1080 pixels) with a refresh rate of 144Hz is the display’s resolution. On the other side, the term IPS-Level can mislead consumers into thinking that a given display panel is indeed an IPS display. If ASUS thinks the panel’s quality is comparable to that of an IPS screen, then it’s a good sign. A TN or VA panel is most likely what you’re seeing on the screen.

One of the two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slots in the ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713QC is occupied by a Samsung 512GB NVMe PCIe 3.0 solid-state drive. The two M.2 slots can only accept NVMe SSDs, not M.2 SATA SSDs, which is a pity.

A wide range of networking options are provided by the ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713QC. For wired connections, there is Gigabit Ethernet (Realtek RTL8168/8111) as well as WiFi 6 (Intel AX201) with 22 MU-MIMO.

Dolby Atmos and two 2-watt stereo speakers are included in the ASUS ROG Strix G17 and G713 laptops’ audio setups. There’s also a noise-canceling microphone if you need to speak. If you wish to use the laptop for video conferencing, you’ll need to purchase a webcam.

There are a lot of ports available on the laptop when it comes to input and output. On the right side, some can be found, while on the back, others must be sought out. On the back, you’ll find an HDMI 2.0b port, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, and the AC power connector.

The laptop’s left side has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and a 3.5 mm combo audio jack. The only item missing is a card reader, in case you were curious. There is also a 56-watt-hour 4-cell Li-ion battery included with the ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713. While other laptop models may include Windows 10 Home or Pro, ours was missing the operating system. Because we tested the Windows 11 Beta, we can vouch for Asus’ assertion that this laptop is compatible with Windows 11.

The keyboard and mouse

The Strix G17 and Scar 17 both have the same glass-clickpad, but the keyboards are the most significant difference.

Full-size keyboard with tiny NumPad on the right side, mini arrows, and an additional set of media keys on the top left are all present on the Strix G17. Each key has a rubber dome with RGB illumination.

Because of my past ROG articles, you’ll know that I had a lot of fun with the keyboard. This is a keyboard that I can see myself using on a regular basis without having to spend a lot of time getting used to.

As long as the F1-F12 key labels aren’t illuminated, it’s impossible to tell which one is which in the dark. However, despite my earlier concerns about this tiny but annoying defect, Asus has decided to keep this keyboard on the 2021 model and not alter it. Next time, please make the necessary corrections!

This year’s touchpad is larger, consisting of glass rather than metal, and does away with the silent tactile click buttons. There are now physical clicks that are clunky, and firmer taps make the surface rattle. All-in-all, my experience with the laptop was a positive one that was enhanced by the fact that I remembered to tap it very lightly when necessary.

Biometrics are absent from the ROG Strix G17 for 2021.

Speakers, connection, and other issues with noise and heat

The thermal design of this Strix G17 is identical to that of the Scar 17 from 2021, with two large fans and a large number of heatpipes. Liquid metal has also been added to the AMD CPU in this series, according to Asus’ claims.

With only 44-45 decibels of noise at head level, the fans are only capable of ramping up to 75-80% of their maximum rpm while on turbo, leading to the high internal temperatures already mentioned.

You’ll need headphones to block out the noise, which may be adjusted in the Armory Crate’s Manual mode. To make a big dent in the system’s temperature, crank up the fans to 85 percent or higher rpm (or at least 48+ dB noise).

The external shell is fine, with temps in the mid to upper 30s around WASD and arrows. Our prior Scar 17 was noticeably cooler than the Strix G17.

In addition to gaming, this laptop makes multitasking, browsing, and streaming video a snap. This holds true regardless of whether the device is powered by its battery or is hooked into a power outlet.

The Intel AX201 chip on this system supports Wireless 6 and Bluetooth 5, but only Gigabit Lan is available. Even at a distance of 30 feet or more from the router with obstacles in the way, our WiFi test sample operated perfectly.

The Strix G17, in contrast to the 2021 Scar 17, retains the previous model’s twin 4W audio system, which fires from the bottom cutouts. The Scar 17 will have four speakers. The sound quality on this device isn’t quite as good as on the MacBook Pro, but it’s still powerful (80 dB) and respectable for a laptop speaker set-up.

In the end, it’s the camera! There still haven’t been any in this series.

In the AMD hive mind

Powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, the Strix G713QR has a clock speed of 3.3GHz. A little more memory would have been nice, but 16GB is more than plenty for the vast majority of games. If you feel the need for more, you can simply remove the backplate and add additional SODIMM sticks.

The GPU does not appear to be a Max-Q iteration as far as we can tell.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GPU is 115W variant with 1100MHz base frequency, 1550MHz boost speed and 1750MHz memory clock according to GPU-Z information.

A maximum temperature of 81.5 degrees Celsius was attained by CPU under gaming stress, while the GPU reached a maximum temperature of 86 degrees Celsius However, a temperature of 96 degrees was recorded from the GPU’s hotspot. Ten degrees Celsius of difference between idle and ambient temperatures was observed.

ASUS deserves credit for the Strix G713QR’s cooling, despite the high temperatures. Increasing the volume of the speakers to 80 percent or more will drown out the fan noise, but the notebook will still be audible.

Conclusion

It’s difficult, but not impossible, to find fault with the ROG Strix G71. There’s a lot of horsepower in both the GPU and the CPU, so it’s capable of nearly anything you throw at it.

A panel with a refresh rate of 300Hz is something we’re not sure why this laptop chose.

You can get that frame rate with a little graphic parameter tweaking, but why would you want to? When compared to a 32-inch or even 27-inch monitor, the display is small at just 17 inches.

In general, unless you’re an elite player, this framerate is likely to be too slow for most people. Overall, it’s a good portable gaming device, and the picture quality is outstanding.

It’s a real shame that this display pushes the notebook’s price up to R48, 000. Having said that, the starting price for a laptop with these specs without the 300Hz display is R37,00, which is roughly what we’d be ready to pay.

Nonetheless, we were impressed by how quiet this notebook was when it was running. In comparison to our daily driver, an Acer Predator Triton 300, the fans make a little noise when they start up. In spite of extensive testing, the keyboard remained comfortable to use.

Since 2011, Asus has pushed its ROG gaming portfolio to establish itself as a prominent player in PC gaming. In contrast, the ROG Strix G17 is a powerful portable gaming alternative if you’re looking for something with a lot of power.
